Halloween and Bonfire night can be fun family events for some, but they are dreaded by others. Cobalt Housing, Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service and Merseyside Police see an increase in reports made at this time of year due to people falling victim of Antisocial behaviour (‘ASB’).
Why is it important to respect others?
An elderly person might be afraid to answer the door, or a new parent might have a sleeping baby in the house. Whether you do or don’t enjoy Halloween & Bonfire night, or choose to celebrate them, please remember to respect each other and be tolerant.
What can I do to help keep our communities and residents safe?
Everyone has a right to live in peace, free from disturbance and nuisance. For a safe community we rely on you to report incidents of ASB and Criminality should you witness this or become a victim. You can help us by:
· Reporting anyone who is selling illegal fireworks or selling fireworks to children
· Reporting bonfire collections/storing of wood or other items that you see in your area
If I’m being persistently targeted or harassed, who can I speak to?
· Cobalt Housing: 0330 303 2222
· Merseyside Police: 999 for emergencies, 101 for non-emergencies or online via www.merseyside.police.uk
· Crimestoppers: 0800 555 1111
· Liverpool City Council: 0151 233 3000
How can I keep my home safe?
· Ensure your wheelie bin is stored in a safe place and out of sight if possible
· Help to protect yourself from burglars by ensuring your home is secure whilst you are out trick or treating or visiting a firework display. Leave a TV or light on or use a timer to make it look like someone is at home.
My pet is scared at this time of year, what can I do?
Your pet may become distressed over the Halloween and Bonfire period due to people knocking at the front door or loud noises from fireworks. Visit www.rspca.org.uk for some great advice on keeping animals safe. Consider asking trick or treaters not to knock this year if it is going to cause your family pet to be distressed.
