The new tax year provides fraudsters with the perfect opportunity to use tax rebate scams.
Please keep an eye out for unsolicited emails, texts or phone calls, even if they appear to come from a legitimate source. Signs that they might be phishing messages include:
- Poor spelling and grammar
- Claiming to offer a tax refund from HMRC
- Urging you to reply or click through to a website
- Asking for confidential information (online banking details, passwords or PIN numbers)
- Offering money or rewards (like lottery prizes)
- Warning that your account may be shut down unless you take some type of action
