If you receive Housing Benefits, you may be sent a migration notice from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), asking you to apply for Universal Credit. Since April, migration notices have been sent out to people receiving certain benefits. This is called Managed Migration and is happening in phases:

Housing Benefits

From April, if you receive a migration notice, you will have three months to apply for Universal Credit. Failure to do so could result in the loss of your benefits. The deadline to make the claim is July.

Tax Credits

Anyone on tax credits will have started receiving their migration notice in April. The deadline to claim is July.

Child Tax Credits and Employment Support Allowance

In July, the DWP will send migration notices to people in receipt of Child Tax Credits or Employment Support Allowance (ESA) who also receive Housing Benefit.

It’s important that you follow the instructions in your migration notice – failure to do so could result in the loss of your benefits.
