If your home cannot hold the moisture in the air, tiny drops of water appear. If this happens regularly, it can cause condensation, which can lead to black or green mould appearing on walls and furniture.
Reducing condensation in the home
There are things that you can do to reduce condensation in your home.
Kitchen
- Open windows and keep lids on pans when cooking
- If your cooker has an extractor fan, use it when cooking
- Open windows when washing up
Bathroom
- If you have an extractor fan, make sure it is switched on when you are running a bath or shower
- Open windows and close doors when having a shower to stop moisture from spreading through your home
Other rooms in the home
- Don’t dry clothes on radiators or in front of a heater
- Keep a space between large items of furniture and walls
- Keep the temperature in your home above 15°C – heating just one room in your home will make the condensation worse
- ‘Cross-ventilate’ your home by opening all windows and internal doors for 30 minutes each day.
