We’re pleased to announce the launch of our Smokefree Homes Policy, as part of our commitment to creating safe, healthy environments for our customers to live in.
Our new voluntary initiative encourages residents to keep their homes smoke-free, helping to protect themselves, their families and their neighbours from the harmful effects of tobacco and second-hand smoke. While the policy is not enforced, it’s about empowering you to make informed choices for a healthier home.
Our Policy is co-created with our customers
We worked closely with Public Health Liverpool and our customers to shape this policy. It builds on the success of our Smokefree Homes campaign in the Broadway neighbourhood, where local awareness efforts have already made a positive impact.
Why Smokefree matters
Second-hand smoke contains over 4,000 harmful chemicals, including around 50 that are known to cause cancer. Even after the smoke clears, toxic residue can linger in carpets and furniture – posing long-term health risks.
Children are especially vulnerable with exposure to smoke increasing the risk of asthma, ear infections and sudden death syndrome (SIDS).
Children who grow up around smokers are also three times more likely to become smokers themselves.
Louise Davies, Executive Director of Communities and Regeneration at Cobalt Housing, said: “We know how important a safe and healthy home environment is to our customers.
“By launching this voluntary policy, we’re supporting people to make informed choices about smoking in the home and helping to create healthier spaces for everyone – especially children.”
Councillor Rahima Farah, Assistant Cabinet Member for Public Health, added: “Second-hand smoke in the home is a major health risk, especially for children.
Creating a smokefree environment can significantly reduce the risk of asthma, ear infections, and even sudden infant death syndrome.
“I applaud Cobalt Housing for showing leadership in putting health at the heart of housing.”
