Across the Liverpool City Region, we understand that many tenants and residents may wish to display patriotic flags in or outside their homes – especially during international sporting events, national celebrations and remembrance events. This is a valued part of community life, and we support expressions of pride and identity when they are respectful and inclusive.

However, we’ve recently seen an increase in the use of flags and messages in response to issues surrounding migration. Some of these displays have caused concern among tenants and colleagues, with many expressing that they feel unwelcome, intimidated or even fearful.

We are proud to be part of a region known for its diversity, solidarity and community spirit; it has always been a place that has welcomed people from around the world.  As housing associations committed to building inclusive, safe and welcoming communities, we stand firmly against racism, intolerance and hate. We are proud to be multicultural organisations that celebrate diversity and promote respect across our communities.

We trust our tenants and colleagues to act responsibly and respectfully. When behaviour does not meet these standards and causes distress or concern, we encourage people to let us know. We will support tenants and colleagues throughout this process.

If we receive complaints about aggressive or offensive messages, including wording on flags, graffiti or vandalism, we will investigate and take appropriate action in line with tenancy agreements and colleague policies.

Together, we can ensure that homes and workplaces across the Liverpool City Region remain places where everyone feels safe, respected and supported.
