Gas Safety Week 2026 (7th to 13th September) is here, and this year’s theme,“Take No Chances”, is a reminder that when it comes to gas safety, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Keeping our customers safe is a top priority. Every year, we carry out thousands of gas safety checks across our homes to help prevent gas leaks, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. These checks are a legal requirement, but more importantly, they help protect you, your family and your neighbours.

As the colder months approach and heating systems begin to work harder, it’s more important than ever to make sure gas appliances are operating safely and efficiently. That’s why we’re asking all customers to allow access for their annual gas safety check.

Customers who provide access at their first gas safety appointment will also be automatically entered into our quarterly prize draw, with one lucky winner receiving a £50 Love2shop voucher.

Why gas safety matters

Gas appliances that are poorly maintained can pose serious risks, including carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas that can’t be seen, smelt or tasted, making it difficult to detect without an audible carbon monoxide alarm.

Common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

If you experience these symptoms and suspect a gas-related issue, seek advice immediately.

Gas safety tips: Take no chances

This Gas Safety Week, we’re encouraging customers to take a few simple steps to stay safe:

  • If you smell gas or your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, call the National Gas Emergency Service (Cadent) immediately on 0800 111 999.
  • Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm in your home.
  • Never attempt to repair or service gas appliances yourself.
  • Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer and ask to see their ID card before any work is carried out.
  • Make sure you keep your annual gas safety appointment.

Support if you’re worried about money

We know that rising household costs can put pressure on many families, particularly as winter approaches.

If you’re worried about energy bills, benefits, debt or the cost of living, our Welfare Advice Team may be able to help.

The team can provide support with benefit applications, budgeting and debt advice, food and fuel vouchers, and accessing additional financial support. Customers can contact the team on 0330 303 2222 for free, confidential advice.

Our Gas Safety Compliance Officer, Hayley Parry, said: “Gas safety is something we should never take chances with. I’d like to thank all of our customers who continue to give us access to carry out these vital safety checks every year. By working together, we’re helping to keep homes, families and communities safe.

“As we head into the colder months, our Gas Safe registered engineers will be making sure boilers and gas appliances are working safely and efficiently. If you’re finding it difficult to manage your energy costs or other household expenses, please remember that support is available through Cobalt and we’re here to help.”
