Autumn and early winter bring more risks into our homes and communities – from candles and costumes to fireworks and portable heaters. We want to make sure everyone enjoys the season safely, especially families with children and older or vulnerable residents.

Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is a fun time for dressing up and decorating, but it’s important to be cautious around flames and heat sources.

  • Keep costumes away from candles, fires, and heaters – especially those with long or flowing fabrics.
  • Check costume labels for fire safety standards (look for a CE mark).
  • Use battery-operated LED tea lights instead of real candles in pumpkins or decorations.
  • Teach children the STOP, DROP and ROLL technique in case of clothing catching fire.

Bonfire Night Safety Tips

We strongly encourage residents to attend organised firework displays rather than lighting fireworks or bonfires at home.

Some local events include:

If you do plan anything at home:

  • Never use petrol or paraffin to start a fire.
  • Keep bonfires well away from buildings, fences and trees.
  • Don’t light fires or fireworks in communal areas – these are not permitted.
  • Keep pets indoors and children supervised.
  • Report any unsafe behaviour to your Housing Officer or Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service.

Heating and Electrical Safety

As temperatures drop, many of us rely on heaters and electric blankets. Here’s how to use them safely:

Electric Blankets:

  • Check for frayed wires or scorch marks.
  • Don’t fold or roll tightly – store flat or loosely.
  • Turn off when not in use, especially overnight.
  • Avoid placing heavy items on top.

Portable Heaters:

  • Keep at least 1 metre away from curtains, furniture and bedding.
  • Never use to dry clothes.
  • Plug directly into the wall – avoid extension leads.
  • Turn off when leaving the room or going to sleep.

We also recommend testing your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors regularly. If you’re a vulnerable resident and use electric blankets or heaters, let us know – we may be able to offer PAT testing support.

Let’s Stay Safe Together

We’re sharing tips throughout this period on our social media, and encouraging everyone to report unsafe behaviour or fire risks. Whether you’re celebrating Halloween, heading to a fireworks display, or staying warm at home – let’s make safety a priority.

Stay Safe. Stay Warm. Stay Informed.
